Last week I was visiting with a sweet lady. As she is getting older, she struggles at times with expressing her thoughts, but she still tries to communicate. It’s as though the words are being held hostage in a dark corner that she cannot reach. As a result, her words come out jumbled, and I have to work to unscramble them. When she talks, I watch her eyes for clues. When I see the sparkle in them, I know that what she is trying to tell me makes her heart happy. I watch her mouth for sound clues, but usually it’s the curl of her lips that tell me that something sassy is coming. Her mind has begun to abandon her, but she is still very much present.

I feel so close to her when I’m with her. Maybe it’s her warm hug that reminds me of the sweet Grammy I used to have. Or maybe it’s because I know how it feels to want to share your heart, but no one seems to get it.

Sometimes life gets overwhelming, and it becomes difficult to maneuver through the ups and downs. Talking to others can be tricky because they have their own battles. It may be hard for them to hear you without comparing their situation. Worse than being told it could be worse, is their inability to see past the titles and gifts, and just see you trying so desperately to unpack your soul.

When I look at my friend, I see so many emotions pass over her face. She begins hopeful, but soon becomes frustrated. After some time and patience, her smile returns. In these moments, I’m reminded that though I may not understand all that is on her mind, what she has to say is still important. She still matters.

If you ever feel alone or unheard, keep trying. Sometimes frustration can make shutting down seem like the answer, but it’s a trick. Isolation only sets you up for depression and makes you feel even lonelier. While you’re still searching for the right words and even the right people to talk to, remember you still matter. Even if you feel misunderstood, what you have to say still matters. What you are feeling still matters. You still matter.

Most importantly, don’t forget about God. Not only is he concerned about what you’re going through, he’s right there with you! You don’t have to be deep or use big words with God. Even when you have no words, he still gets it. You still matter.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2

Strengthen. Heal. Empower.
