Being separated from those I am used to seeing has been a real challenge. I miss them so much. It’s nice when we all meet up on Zoom, but I want to see them. I won’t get into my many complaints about this quarantine business, but I will say that like so many others, I have had to up my creativity.
When I was kid, I never got in trouble for passing notes. It was nothing for me to take the time to precisely fold paper and tear it slowly down the crease. I tried to change the look of just regular paper. I wanted the person receiving the note to feel special. I would use crayons and doodle in the corners. That probably doesn’t sound like much given the means of communication we have now, but it was a big deal. Not everyone thought to send a note. Not everyone in class got a note.
Before last year, I passed notes in church. It was my way of checking in with the people around me. I still pass notes. Instead of tearing paper, I dip into my card supply and postage stamps. I mix and match pen colors with stickers.
Our current situation cannot keep us from checking in with the people we love. We can still let them know that we are thinking of them. In fact, we should let them know we are thinking of them. Doesn’t it feel good to know you aren’t alone. Somebody in this big world, with their own things to deal with, is thinking of you.
Let’s make time for each other. Whether it’s a phone call, text, or a social media post, be the reason someone smiles. I want you to know that I will be checking in with you every Monday. In addition to our talks here, I’m going to share a short video of hope and encouragement on my Instagram page (@drdeewrites). Why? Because you matter! Think of it as me passing you a note in class. We’re all trying to make it through these difficult days. Let’s do it together.
Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another. Romans 12:10
