What kind of sleeper are you? Do you pass out as soon as your head hits the pillow, or do you need some time to ease into slumber? I’m the latter. It doesn’t matter how tired I am, I still need at minimum 45 minutes to unwind.

I am serious dreamer. One thing that always makes me laugh is when I fall asleep with the television on. I start off hanging out with my friends and then all of a sudden, I’m solving a crime with some famous detective. I don’t know if there is a scientific name for it, but what I do know is that my mind heard whatever was playing externally.

This time of year is really busy for my church. It’s the time when we fellowship with other churches as we celebrate their anniversaries in ministry. That always means loud jubilant music and a ton of singing. When I get home, I can still hear the music playing in my head. When I get in the shower, I find myself either singing aloud or repeating the message I heard. I actually talk to myself in there…I’m not the only one.

Hearing the music and words of inspiration from others can be so uplifting, but what about the words you say to yourself? Are you repeating the negative things that have been whispered in your ears? Are you limiting your creativity and your happiness, because you listen to the naysayers? Is it your voice you hear?

This is just my opinion, but no one’s words will affect you more than your own. I’m not saying they can’t be hurtful or discouraging, but when you take in those words and began to rehearse them, then you become your own enemy. You become the person who speaks down to you. You become the person who destroys your hopes and dreams.

Choose your words carefully. They can either be poison or fruit. When you open your mouth, listen for encouragement, hope, and love. It’s okay to talk to yourself even when you’re not in the shower!

Words satisfy the mind as much as fruit does the stomach; good talk is as gratifying as a good harvest. Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit-you choose. Proverbs 18:20-21 MSG

Strengthen. Heal. Empower.
